He never, ever forgets

Tonight, on a phone call from Indonesia, where it was already September 29 when he called, Coty reminded me that it is the 35th anniversary of our first date.  He never, ever, ever forgets that date.

That evening, we baked bread at my house, went for a walk through the woods, and looked at the slides from his semester away teaching school in rural Kenya.  It was the start of what has been an amazing journey together.

In honor of 35 years, 35 things we've done together since then, in no particular order ...

1. Backpacked in Sliding Rock Wilderness, Yellowstone, Glacier, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, the Grand Canyon, and the last 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Maine (I'm probably leaving out some!)

2. Attempted a climb of Mt. Kenya (we got snowed out!)

3. Traveled to northern Kenya and watched a herd of elephants 20 feet from our campsite one 4th of July

4. Snorkled in the Indian Ocean

5. Ridden horses near Lake Naivasha

6. Driven across the US

7. Seen a beached blue whale on a foggy beach in California

8. Run and cycled together

9. Baked countless loaves of bread

10. Given birth to six babies, one in Nairobi, Kenya; two at home in Virginia; and three at home in Massachusetts

11. Barricaded our front door for fear of fleeing soldiers during a coup attempt in Nairobi in 1982

12. Gone to the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 to watch track and field, of course!

13. Moved nine times. (California, Kenya, California, Virginia, Massachusetts, Kenya, Massachusetts, Cameroon, North Carolina)

14.  Seen bears, moose, and elk at very close range.

15.  Spent a Christmas day with everyone in the family sick with the stomach flu.

16.  Planted gardens.

17.  Driven 15 passenger vans.

18.  Cross-country skiied in Bear Valley, Yosemite, Massachusetts, and Vermont

19.  Done pre-marital counseling with more than ten couples.

20.  Lived in Africa three different times.

21.  Traveled to India and Bolivia.

22.  Had our passports taken away by angry Egyptian soldiers in the Cairo airport the day after Anwar Sadat's assasination.

23.  Read countless books out loud.

24.  Played Scrabble, backgammon, Upwords, and so many other games.

25.  Worn traditional Cameroonian outfits in a graduation ceremony.

26.  Watched our children run cross country and track, act in plays and musicals, perform in piano recitals and choral and orchestra concerts, ride in horse shows, play football and soccer

27.  Bought three houses.

28.  Gone to outdoor plays and concerts.

29.  Sung the Messiah with the Nairobi Choral Society.

30.  Had a million guests - well, maybe not a million - but a whole. whole lot

31.  Camped and canoed in the Adirondacks

32.  Welcomed a son-in-law and two daughters-in-law to our family.

33.  Read through the Bible several times

34.  Prayed

35.  Welcomed our first grandchild into the world minutes after she was born.

The list could go on and on and on.  Here's to at least 35 more years, sweetheart.  More good bread, more travel, more time with family and friends, and more of each other's sweet company as we move into the next season of life!

What lovely memories - most of them, anyway! I was just remembering this morning that this weekend seven years ago was significant in my relationship with my husband too, not quite our first date, but moving in that direction. God is good to us.
